Solution
If you've just switched over to Office 2007, which a lot of people are finally doing, here's a hint for saving documents so that they are backward compatible by default, rather than using the .docx format. In the Word, Excel or PowerPoint, just go to the Office button at the top left and select, for instance, Word Options at the bottom right of the popup window, then select Save in the left column. Finally, choose "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)" in the top option.
